Cultural-historical Research
When visiting the Tenterden second hand book market, a stall holder showed a book of the correspondence of Vita with Andrew Reiber, an American. When reading this, I discovered that Vita asked him for Peppermint Zinnia seed, which she couldn’t get in the UK. He sent her every year a package on the 14th of February and she sowed it at the bottom of the Moat Wall. Just in that time our Asters which were there for decades, didn’t perform very well and we decided to replace them with wallflowers in spring and zinnias in autumn, which provides a lovely display. Our trial Peppermint Zinnia’s were a bit too weak, so we continue our search for a stronger strand. In the meantime the single coloured ones perform beautifully.
